The power of the Kingdom of God

Vyacheslav Goncharenko(The fourth sermon in a series «The Kingdom of God and its main features»)

1 Corinthians 4:20:

For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power.

Today we are going to talk about the Kingdom of God. Do you believe that you as God’s people already dwell in the Kingdom of God? Do you believe that the Kingdom of God dwells in you? The Scripture says that the Kingdom of God is within you. So we dwell in the Kingdom of God. We entered the Kingdom by means of our birth. We got born again and became a new creation. Thus the Kingdom of God dwells in us. The Kingdom has a King. There is no kingdom without a king. In our Kingdom, the Kingdom of Jesus Christ, the Kingdom of God, Jesus Christ of Nazareth is the King. He is a great King. He is a righteous King. He is a mighty King. It’s written that He is the lion of Jude. By the way, devil is not a lion; he is walking like a roaring lion. He tries to imitate the real lion. A thundering roar of our King is heard all over the earth; He is coming soon. The Scripture tell our King is coming soon. It’s because the Kingdom of God is here; it’s come near and is growing. It’s getting bigger; it multiplies. Only in China 40,000 people join the Kingdom daily. Just think of it! How about other countries? How many people all around the earth will join the Kingdom of God this Sunday morning? Thousands, tens of thousands and even hundreds of thousands will join I believe. The Kingdom of God doesn’t grow smaller; it grows bigger. The King Jesus rules in the Kingdom of God. Halleluiah!

Ecclesiastes 8:4:

Where the word of a king is, there is power

A kingdom means power. You won’t see a kingdom where there is no authority and power. Any kingdom has power and authority. The Kingdom of God also has power. You do remember how Jesus won the victory on the cross, how He died and rose again, how He entered Heaven and sat at the right hand of the Heavenly Father. You do remember how He asked the Father and He sent the Holy Spirit. On the day of Pentecost the Holy Spirit came upon the disciples.

Acts 1:8:

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you…

The Holy Spirit Himself is the power of the Kingdom of God. It’s the Holy Spirit Who supplies us with the ability to dwell in the Kingdom and live by its standards. It’s because He is the power of the Kingdom. When the Holy Spirit came He disclosed the mystery that had been kept hidden for ages and generations.

Colossians 1:26-29:

… the mystery that has been kept hidden for ages and generations, but is now disclosed to the Lord’s people.  To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory. He is the one we proclaim, admonishing and teaching everyone with all wisdom, so that we may present everyone fully mature in Christ. To this end I strenuously contend with all the energy Christ so powerfully works in me.

What a great mystery was hidden! But now it’s been disclosed. There are a number of places in the Scripture that tell about that mystery. Many people are stuck thinking, “What kind of mystery is this?” It’s a mystery that was hidden for many ages and generations but in the age of the New Testament this mystery became transparent and available. And here is what this mystery is all about: Jesus Christ in you. Now, Jesus Christ is in you. The Holy Spirit comes and dwells within us, He fills us up. And this anointing of the Holy Spirit is Christ in us.

What has God done? He has accomplished His dream to be as close to man as possible, to be not only by man’s side but to be actually in him. Prophesy tells: “As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” This is what makes us God’s people; this is what makes us the true children of God. When the Holy Spirit rests on us and dwells within us then resurrected Christ lives in us. This is the mystery of God that has been revealed.

The Scripture says that we are changed from glory to glory. The Old Testament had its own glory which got deemed. The New Testament has its glory which is the Holy Spirit Who dwells within us, which is Jesus Christ Who is in us, which is God Who is in us.

1 Corinthians 2:7:

No, we declare God’s wisdom, a mystery that has been hidden and that God destined for our glory before time began.

We shouldn’t preach just words; we should preach the mystery of God. I don’t preach sermons; I preach the mystery of God. When we reveal this mystery it saturates us with glory. God’s glory is the Holy Spirit within us. The moment we got born again we received the Holy Spirit. We have received that very Spirit Who created the earth and Who raised Jesus Christ from the dead. Each of us has obtained the potential of God Himself. We may put it in this way: the Maker of Heaven and earth has made His home in us. Great God dwells within us. Just think of what God has done: He has made His dwelling place in us.

Galatians 2:20:

… I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.

Each of us should have this mindset. We all should embrace this idea.

Galatians 2:20:

The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.

The Holy Spirit, Who rests on us, indwells us and makes us legitimate children in the Kingdom of God, didn’t come to “help” you and me live life of no purpose. He came so that we may live the life of Christ. Christian life is not hard, it’s impossible. No man can live Christian life. There is only one who can. It’s Jesus Christ of Nazareth. He is the only one Who can live this life. And the Holy Spirit came so that we can live the life of Christ and Jesus Christ can live through us. Our own life has passed away and now Jesus Christ, our new King, sits on the throne of our heart. He lives His life through us.

It’s extremely important that we with all due submission may let Jesus Christ live His life through us. It will make our life bright and glorious. Sometimes we don’t realize what we have got, what a great potential is hidden within us. We don’t realize that we are carrying resurrected Christ on the inside of us. We don’t realize that “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever”. (Hebrews 13:8). We refer to Jesus as being somewhere far away. Yes, He is on the throne. But consider the following: Jesus Christ yesterday and today and forever lives within us. He, King and God, created the entire universe, lives in us and never changes. He dwells in us through His Holy Spirit; the Holy Spirit dwells in us. He is not coming in and out. We can’t sense Him but He is in us. It’s 100 % true. He never leaves us. We are sealed by the Holy Spirit. We are Christ’s and we are united with Him forever.

The greatest mystery in the world is that Jesus Christ got inside of us. Thus God has accomplished His purpose. Here is God’s dream for every believer: Christ lives in us and we become a perfect picture of Him.

Let us adopt the following mindset: if Christ lives in you then whenever you speak it’s the Spirit of Heavenly Father speaks through you, whenever you look at something it’s God looks at this world through your eyes, whenever you touch a person it’s Jesus touches him, whenever you do something it’s Jesus does it through you, whenever you walk somewhere it’s Jesus walks together with you. He never lets you walk alone; He walks with you because He lives on the inside of you.

This is how we are to think: God is not somewhere out of our reach and we pray to Him Who is far away and He may do something for us or may not. God surrounds us from every side. God, the Holy Spirit, dwells on and in us.

Jesus would like to rule through us. God’s Kingdom is God’s government. You and I are His governors because it’s written that we are kings and priests.

1 Peter 2:9:

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s special possession, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light.

The Word of God says that we are a chosen people, a royal priesthood. That means that we are kings and priests. We should learn to adopt royal mindset and think like kings because we are spiritual governors over this earth. We have got God’s authority and power, the power of the Holy Spirit.

Luke 10:19:

I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

This is what we have been given by God’s grace. This is what wealth you and I have got. This is why you don’t need to be afraid of the devil. Even if you came to Jesus Christ just recently you are under God’s protection. You don’t need to be scared of witchcraft, sorcery, superstitious beliefs because you are in the Kingdom of God and you have power over it. It’s written that you can trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. This is a position a believer, a new creation in the Kingdom of God, has obtained.

Mathew 18:18:

Truly I tell you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven.

Doesn’t this verse speak about the authority each believer was given? In fact it says that Heaven comes into agreement with us when we command demons to flee, when we rule over forces of nature or obstacles, sicknesses and weaknesses. When we speak it out Heaven approves of it. You can bind something and Heaven consents; you can get something loose and Heaven approves of it. You can allow something on earth and Heaven allows it; you can ban something on earth and Heaven agrees on it. This is the authority God’s people were given.

A great number of people ask the wrong question. For instance, they say, “Look, what is happening in my life. I live right at the bottom trying somehow to get to the top. I have been a believer for many years. What is going on? Why does God allow this to happen?” But in fact this is what God is asking us, “Why do you allow this to happen? Don’t you know the truth that you have been given the authority? You are able to stop it, you can either bind or loose. You are in authority, why don’t you use it? Why don’t you forbid Satan? Why don’t you rebuke demons? Why don’t you use the authority of a God’s policeman? Why don’t you use the authority?” Many things happen in our life only because we let them. We don’t use our authority, don’t stand against. We don’t use the authority Jesus Christ has given us. His power is so great that you can command a mountain to move into the sea and if you don’t doubt it will obey.

God values the words of a Spirit filled believer so that He won’t let them fail to come to pass. It might be hard to understand. People believe that only what God says or promises happens. But because we are in covenant with God and cooperate with Him He can get in agreement with what we say and do something according to our words. In the Bible you can find many passages where God did what a God’s man or a prophet said.

Let’s go back to the Old Testament. Chapter 37 of the book of the prophet Ezekiel says that God showed His prophet a field covered with dry bones and said, “Look at the field. Will these dry bones come alive, what do you think?” The prophet doubted, “You know, Lord, …” But God tells him, “Prophesy to these dry bones and tell them, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: … I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin…” Further it says, “As I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them … they came to life and stood up on their feet–a vast army.”

Do you see the power hidden in God’s people and in the words they say?! That’s why the Bible says: “Don’t pronounce a curse upon anybody.” You don’t realize the power you possess. Don’t you ever say such things because you don’t know what will happen when you say it. For this reason the Bible tells: keep your mouth, don’t speak too much. In fact you can’t imagine what your words are able to accomplish since God has given you great authority.

Now let’s recall one more story from the Old Testament when Elijah had to be taken up to Heaven. Elisha walked with Elijah all the time. Elijah would say, “Well, it’s enough, leave me alone.” Elisha would reply, “No, I am going to stay with you.” And he followed Elijah from town to town, keeping on saying, “I am going to stay by your side.” Elijah asked, “What do you want from me?” Elisha replied, “I believe you are a God’s prophet. Let me inherit a double portion of the anointing and the power you have.” It said nothing of Elijah prayed and asked God. They had a short talk, Elijah said: “If you see me when I am taken from you, it will be yours.” For this reason Elisha, being eager to have the power, followed Elijah everywhere and watched. He believed that angels could take Elijah up to Heaven so he realized that his teacher could disappear any moment. That’s why he kept his eyes on his teacher. Elisha was Elijah’s servant. It’s written he poured out water for Elijah to wash his hands. And suddenly a chariot of fire took Elijah away. Elijah was taken up to Heaven. Elisha saw that and cried out, “My father! My father!” Elijah disappeared. But then Elisha saw Elijah’s cloak lying on the ground. He picked it up and said, “Well, let’s see.” He struck the water of the river Jordan with it and it divided to the right and to the left. It’s written that the Spirit of God, the spirit of Elijah, rested upon Elisha and he became a new prophet. Over his life Elisha performed twice as many miracles as Elijah. The Bible depicts 16 miracles of Elijah and 31 of Elisha. But if he obtained a double portion he should have made 32. It seems inaccurate because a double portion means multiplying by two. One miracle seems to be missing.

But let recall the story which took place after Elisha died. At a war there was a fistfight. Several men carried a person who was killed but it happened that the dead fell down on a grave where Elisha’s bones lied. The dead fell on those bones and came back to life. 32 miracles. God is always precise!

Today we are talking of the power believer’s words contain. Elijah might not really believe that what Elisha asked for was possible. He said, “You have asked a hard thing, nevertheless… ” Perhaps he said that thinking Elisha would surely overlook his departure. That’s why he put it, “If you see…” He voiced a condition which showed that he didn’t truly believe it would happen. But the word of the God’s man wasn’t left unfulfilled. God backs up the words of His anointed ones. God keeps His promises. He also fulfills the promises which His people, not Him, speak. I am 100% sure. Many things you have pronounced either being moved by the Holy Spirit or on your own are coming to pass. You see something which should be done, you declare it and, I am highly positive, God will do it. You can feel what Jesus Christ feels and you understand this is the way it should be. So when you speak it God will do it because, in fact, it’s what He desires as well.

We are to make a quality decision to be what God created us to be: new creation, royal people, royal priesthood. We are to appropriate this power and authority. I feel the Holy Spirit stirs up my heart, my spirit keeping on reminding me of God’s power we have obtained. The Kingdom of God is not in words but in demonstration of power. God wants His authority to be displayed through us.

The eighth chapter of the book of Romans says that the whole world is waiting for something. It’s written that the creation waits with eager longing. What is that the world earnestly expecting? What is the whole creation longing for? They wait for the revealing of the sons of God. They expect we receive the revelation of the Kingdom, His authority and power, the Holy Spirit Who is in us. We are to live in accordance with this revelation and demonstrate it.

You might think, “How is that? So many things are going on in my life. Sometimes I feel so feeble and weak. I don’t have faith to deal with this problem.” And this is the problem. God’s truth which is pronounced today is supposed to set you free, that you may see yourself differently, see yourself as God’s son or daughter, as royal priesthood, as a holy person who belongs to God, has been called, anointed and filled by the Holy Spirit. God expects for you to see yourself this way. (Бог от тебя ожидает этого)

Many believers spend out their life. Over the entire life they never use the authority, never lead others to Jesus, never lay their hands on the sick, never drive evil spirits out. They apathetically contemplate what is going on around them and say, “What can I do about it?” This is a big problem believers have: having got great power, they don’t believe they are able to do something.

One man shared a story on how he served in the army. There was one new recruit who physically looked like a giant: the tallest one with strong shoulders. Everyone else look like knee high to a grasshopper (gnome карлик) comparing to him. When he just arrived, elder soldiers (служивые из старшего призыва («деды») began bullying at him. But he didn’t say a word. So they just shut him down (они просто задавили его). They made him wash their socks, clean up the toilets. And that brother shared, “I wondered, how can a guy having such physical appearance, muscles, stature act like that? Had I been of such a shape I would definitely have showed who I am.”

Many believers act like that guy in the story. They don’t believe they are giants on the inside. They don’t believe the King lives in them. They don’t believe they have been given the authority in Jesus Christ. For this reason they never use this authority as if they don’t have it. But in fact they do have it. God didn’t take it away. Each believer has been anointed. Even a small girl who has just invited Jesus Christ to enter her heart can command and evil spirit will leave. She can stand against any bad circumstances. Each person who has been filled with the Holy Spirit has possessed such authority. If Christ is in us we have such power in our spirit. It’s a treasure hidden in us. It’s a mystery revealed in the New Testament. All of you here who have been filled with the Holy Spirit have been anointed.

I will say a few words about anointing. “Christ” in Greek means “Anointed one”, in Hebrew – “Messiah”. So Jesus Christ literally means “Jesus Anointed one”. God has given us the same anointing, the same power.

Out of my experience I can say that this anointing can be translated into the realm of senses, you can physically feel it. You can feel on the inside that you are much more powerful than on the outside. Why is that?

There are a number of passages in the Scripture which describe the anointing as oil. When oil was applied on a person’s head he was said to be anointed. Kings, priests, prophets were anointed which was the sign of God’s power rested on them.

How is oil made? They place olives under a press and squeeze oil out of them. When I was in Israel we visited a village which was the exact copy of the village Jesus lived in 2000 years ago. There we saw the process how they made olive oil. A donkey was tightened up to a mill stone. They poured olives inside and the donkey had to walk around, the stone squeezed the olives and oil started going out.

Here is what reflection I saw. какую параллель я увидел) It’s written: “you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you”. And when the Holy Spirit came people began speaking in tongues. Many believers underestimate praying in tongues. Prayer is hard work. When a person gets understanding, intensifies his prayer and commits to praying in tongues it becomes like a mill stone which “squeezes” your anointing out of you. The more you pray the more oil will flow out. There are anointed people who don’t pray and this anointing doesn’t flow. They live ordinary life like others do. But those who get understanding, begin praying, squeezing, making efforts and the oil starts first dropping out and then flowing out. As it’s written the Kingdom of God is taking by force. What is that anointing? It’s Jesus, who lives in us, starts dropping out and then flowing out through our life. It’s when amazing things begin to happen. It’s when what Jesus Christ did begin to happen.

I see that many people don’t understand, don’t have a revelation on how it works. But I am telling you, attend prayer meetings and you will notice how anointing will start flowing out and Christ will be seen more in more in your life. There are thousands and thousands testimonies of people who got amazed seeing how it works. They had never thought such things might happen and God could move through them in such a powerful way. You will speak usual words, do usual things but the power of God will be in it. That’s why we should be filled with the Holy Spirit. And you will testify God’s mystery, Christ living in us, manifesting in your life.
